Life In The Slow Lane...

This is a commentary about the slow lane, about the slowing of time since I suffered a severe brain injury while skateboarding with my dog. This is a blog about recovery; about our '82 VW Westfalia. It's about writing, surfing, camping, married life, bleeding ulcers that make you feel old at 32; about family, friends, and my dog Artie; it's about cruising in fourth gear, getting passed by every car and learning to appreciate every second of it.

Testostergone...

It's been months since I posted on a regular basis. It's crazy how this blog has reflected my mental and physical state. Days after the injury, the posts were chaotic and often incoherent. In the following weeks, I began to have more insight, I pondered what would happen as a result of the injury. Throughout the entire time, for the two years since the fall, there's been ups and downs.

The past few months have been different. I have been fatigued, withdrawn, moody, and let me throw in another fatigue for good measure. The fatigue and despondency has kept me from posting in this blog, from surfing, from being more productive at work, from calling friends and family -- the few I talk to that is. It also took me to some of the darkest places that I have ever been.

There was no explanation for this new state.

The other day I finally mustered the energy and called my doctor back about that testosterone test that I had taken a while back. He told me that my testosterone levels were low and could explain the low-energy and bad moods. Apparently this is normal in people with head injuries.

Tomorrow, I pick up my testosterone cream from the pharmacy. So, be prepared the next time I write the topics might be a bit different; possibly about football, working out, tanning, and well, we will see.

  1. I use a natural progesterone cream for some female issues and it works , so I don't see why testostorone cream wouldn't work , if it is recommended for you. B.

  2. Hope it gives you back a little of what you're looking for and perhaps some unexpected positives as well.

  3. I really, really hope the cream helps you. I honestly get how you feel, especially the best/worst day of your life post. Two years ago I went out for a jog and a car, traveling at 40mph, smacked into me and sent me airborne--the back of my head broke through the windshield and I flipped over the roof and sailed 35 feet down the road and landed on the front of my head....I'm not trying to make this post about me,just trying to say that I completely, totally understand---not like well meaning friends who say they know what you're going through because they "forget" things all the time...brain injury forgetfulness is just different. Anyway, I'll sign off as a kindred spirit and wish you well.....all the best, Kate

  4. Thanks for the comments B, and CeCe. Unfortunately, my insurance doesn't cover the cream or the patch so I'll have to find another way. Definitely not paying $180 a month for it.

And hi Katie. Thanks for the well-wishes. I wish the same for you and your recovery. I know there are so many different levels of head injuries, and so many different issues that go along with them but it means a lot hearing from kindred spirits. Thanks and take care!
